Excessive sweating of the feet (plantar hyperhidrosis) is a common problem that is characterized by sweating feet above normal. When an unpleasant smell arises, it is called bromhidrosis. It is the interaction between sweat and the microorganisms present on the skin and in the shoes / socks that will cause the odor. Everyone is likely to be affected, but young men are mostly affected, while this problem is rather rare in the elderly.

There is not always an underlying cause for excessive sweating of the feet, but there may be an associated hereditary component. However, several factors may be related to this problem.

  • Hormonal change
  • Stress / fatigue
  • High outdoor temperature
  • Some drugs
  • Some diseases
  • In addition, some factors will promote sweating :

    • Bad socks (synthetic fabrics)
    • Poorly ventilated shoes

Excessive sweating of the feet can cause a major feeling of foot discomfort, due to high humidity inside the shoe / sock.

It can also lead to other problems, such as an athletic foot or skin irritation.

Hyperhidrosis and bromidrosis can cause psychological problems because they cause a feeling of embarrassment and shame in the affected person. Excessive sweating of the feet can thus become a real handicap, thus having a negative impact on the quality of life.

Treatments for excessive sweating of feet vary greatly. Your podiatrist will advise you on appropriate treatments, depending on the extent of the problem.

Here are some practical tips to help you :
