Plantar warts are benign lesions that affect the superficial layer of the skin, the epidermis. They are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Plantar warts develop as a result of direct virus contact with the skin and may appear in isolation or in a mosaic pattern (several warts grouped together). Plantar warts are contagious, so it is strongly advised to treat them to avoid proliferation on other areas of the foot and to avoid transmitting the virus to your surroundings. Treatment will also prevent the pain that warts can cause.
Several types of treatments are offered. An evaluation of the lesion by a podiatrist will determine the appropriate treatment.
