INGROWN TOENAIL

The ingrown toenail is a nail that penetrates the surrounding skin on one or both sides, causing a painful inflammation that can lead to a local infection that can result in redness, swelling or even pus. We must not, therefore, take this condition lightly. It is important to treat an ingrown nail quickly to avoid any complication, such as deep tissue infection or bone infection. The toenail of the big toe is most often affected, but all toes are likely to develop an ingrown toenail.

THE MOST COMMON CAUSES OF INGROWN TOENAIL :

Poor nail cut: it is important to cut the right nails and not try to dig in the corners

Inadequate shoe (shoe too tight at the front of the foot, or shoe too small, or even wear high heels)

Natural form of the nail (the nails too curved or rounded tend to incarnate)

Underlying bone disease

Heredity

Single trauma (an object that falls on the nail or a blow)

Repeated trauma (practice of a sport)

Swelling of the feet (eg venous edema)

SYMPTOM OF AN INGROWN NAIL

The main symptom of an ingrown toenail is pain that appears on the skin around the affected nail. This pain is increased with wearing tight shoes. The simple weight of the bed sheets can create pain. Generally, the pain is accompanied by redness and localized swelling of the skin surrounding the incarnated nail. If the problem is not treated, a flow of pus or serous fluid may occur.

INGROWN NAIL TREATMENTS

Your podiatrist has the skills and tools to effectively deal with the ingrown toenail. He can also advise you on the right way to cut nails to prevent ingrown nail recurrences.

When the condition is minor, a simple release of the problematic nail part may be sufficient to treat this condition.

When the condition gets bigger, the podiatrist can perform minor surgery by removing the portion of the nail inserted into the skin. In some cases, for example, when the ingrown toenail is a recurring problem, it is possible to eliminate the root of the nail which is curved to permanently solve the problem, while keeping the aesthetic of the toe and of the nail. Healing is simple and fast.
